Guide to Setup a Small Business Computer Network

Over the years, setting up a small business computer network has become much easier than you think as network technologies and operating systems have improved and networking and storage peripherals have developed to just plug & play features. Having a perfect network setup allows you to share a single broadband internet connection among multiple PC users. Users of a computer networking system are also able to share file and software resources among computers (which are connected to network) easily. Networking allows you to use a printer connected to a different computer, and access media and other resources, which are stored remotely across the office.

Few tips for setting up a small business computer network setup.

Use wireless networking equipment, because it comes within your budget, easier to configure and use, and allows you to have an attractive office environment with fewer cables. With a wireless networking, you can use your laptop anywhere in the office. However, Ethernet-based wired networking still have the edge over wireless networking      in being more reliable and offering faster connection speeds. On the other hand wireless signals completely depend on your office layout, wall thickness and sometimes even on weather.

You can run a basic network on operating systems like Microsoft Windows Vista, Windows XP and Apple Mac OS X. Use an up to date laptop or desktop computer, which will work as your network center or server. Apart from a computer, you will also need networking equipment. For larger computer networking setups, you may require some additional wireless or wired routers and Ethernet cables to link-up the PCs. If you want to setup a wireless network inside your workplace, then you will need a wireless router linked to your broadband connection and server.

After you set up the network, you should consider about its protection. Activate the security settings of the router and the operating system. Use wireless encryption protocol (WEP) to stop the unauthorized use of your business network. You also can use Windows and network logins and passwords to limit the access of your network to only authorized persons. For further protection, you may also use fingerprint protection and full disk encryption for safety. To protect your business network from virus, spam and hacking attempts, turn ON your browser security options and manage your privacy settings with help of a network expert.
