Why Firewall is Essential for You?

The firewall is a protective layout between your computer and all other computers you are connected to. When you use the internet, you are all visible to the outside through different ports. Usually we use three types of port services; World Wide Web (Port 80), Incoming E-mail (Port 110) and Outgoing E-mail (Port 25). The firewall system closes off the ports which you aren’t using, because open ports are an invitation to hackers to raid your computer.

Things would happen if you don’t have a firewall

Without firewall, your computer will be attacked within minutes. Your computers will be packed with Trojans, popup messages, virus and other worms. Malware and spyware will obstruct your browsers. The internet is full of hackers and other individuals who are waiting for your security vulnerability, so they can damage your computer systems or steal your personal information within just seconds. It is the job of firewall to prevent them. It acts like your system’s bouncer making sure anyone won’t pass through your ports.

How it works?

Most of the firewalls will warn you about suspicious incoming traffic. Whoever will try to gain access to your computer will hit your computer’s firewall first. It deflects the attack and gives the user a warning message about it. Some good firewall systems also warn you about suspicious outgoing traffic. So the best firewalls do both and informs you both incoming and outgoing traffic.

Which firewall should you use?

If you are using a wireless router then you already have a firewall in it. Check your router’s configurations and turned it ON. Once it is turned on, you can use a software firewall on each of your PC connected to the router for added protection. If you are not using a router then you need a software firewall. Install a well reputed internet security software which includes a firewall within it; like Kaspersky in your PC.
