Types of Business Servers and Their Respective Roles

Whether you have a small business or a big one, a server is most essential to operate your daily day business works and to keep your business data safe. There are several types of servers available in the market to serve your network and users. In larger business network environments different types of servers work in different roles to provide a greater accuracy in business workouts. Below some of them are descried shortly for your acknowledgement.

Database Server

It refers to the back-end system of a database application using client architecture. These types of servers work on a higher-end computer and host the database. It performs tasks such as data storage, analysis, manipulation, archiving and other non-user specification tasks.

File Server

A file server is a computer used for central storage and management of data files, so that other computers on the same network can access all the files. These types of servers allow users to share data and information over a network without having any physical transfer. Any computer on a specific network can be configured as a host to act as a file server. It acts as a remote hard disc drive for other computers on the similar network.

POS Server

POS (Point Of Sale) is a computer based order-entry technology, mostly used in restaurants, bars and shopping malls to capture, record data, orders, and to display or print bills and tickets. The POS, server holds a central database to which all the POS terminals communicate regarding data.

Print Server

This is a software application that manages several print requests and makes printer queue status information available to network administrators and other end users. Print servers are used in both small and big enterprises. A dedicated computer serving as a print server can manage hundreds of printers of a large organization.

Web Server

A web server is a programming that serves the files from web pages to web users. Every web server has a domain name and IP address. If any user enters an URL in the browser, this sends a request to the web server. Then the server fetches the page and sends it to the browser. Any computer can be used as a web server, just by installing server software and connecting it to the internet. Apache and Internet Information Server (IIS) are two leading web servers. These servers are used for hosting web sites and internet sites.

Why Firewall is Essential for You?

The firewall is a protective layout between your computer and all other computers you are connected to. When you use the internet, you are all visible to the outside through different ports. Usually we use three types of port services; World Wide Web (Port 80), Incoming E-mail (Port 110) and Outgoing E-mail (Port 25). The firewall system closes off the ports which you aren’t using, because open ports are an invitation to hackers to raid your computer.

Things would happen if you don’t have a firewall

Without firewall, your computer will be attacked within minutes. Your computers will be packed with Trojans, popup messages, virus and other worms. Malware and spyware will obstruct your browsers. The internet is full of hackers and other individuals who are waiting for your security vulnerability, so they can damage your computer systems or steal your personal information within just seconds. It is the job of firewall to prevent them. It acts like your system’s bouncer making sure anyone won’t pass through your ports.

How it works?

Most of the firewalls will warn you about suspicious incoming traffic. Whoever will try to gain access to your computer will hit your computer’s firewall first. It deflects the attack and gives the user a warning message about it. Some good firewall systems also warn you about suspicious outgoing traffic. So the best firewalls do both and informs you both incoming and outgoing traffic.

Which firewall should you use?

If you are using a wireless router then you already have a firewall in it. Check your router’s configurations and turned it ON. Once it is turned on, you can use a software firewall on each of your PC connected to the router for added protection. If you are not using a router then you need a software firewall. Install a well reputed internet security software which includes a firewall within it; like Kaspersky in your PC.
